The SHIKAKU at ISSEY MIYAKE SHINJUKU presents an installation, “PALINDROME” by ISSEY MIYAKE.

PALINDROME is a series that challenges the conventional notion of “inner” and “outer” in clothing, offering reversible options to the wearer.

For the jacket and jumpsuit styles, what would typically be considered the lining is constructed in the form of a shirt, subtly patterned with small ISSEY MIYAKE logos. When the garment is worn conventionally, it appears as though a shirt is layered under the jacket. When worn inside out, the wearer looks as if they are wearing a shirt attached to the back. The inner of the pants features a shorts style lining, which can be paired with other items in the series for a playful tailored ensemble.

This exhibition presents the PALINDROME garments alongside a video, introducing this design that is not bound by the notion of “inner vs. outer”. By embracing the act of wearing with greater freedom, it explores a new relationship between the wearer and the worn.
