The SHIKAKU at ISSEY MIYAKE SHINJUKU presents an exhibition, “WOOD” by ISSEY MIYAKE EYES.

ISSEY MIYAKE EYES is a project that started in 2015 through the collaboration between MDS (MIYAKE DESIGN STUDIO) and Kaneko Optical.
With a focus on contemporary living, the project aims to develop innovative eyewear that combines unique design perspectives with cutting-edge techniques, resulting in practical products unlike any other.
The new model from ISSEY MIYAKE EYES, “WOOD”, is distinguished by its textured frames, inspired by carved wood.
Each frame is individually crafted by skilled artisans who carve them by hand to resemble natural wood. Fine scratches on the surface of the frames give the eyewear a unique texture that industrial processes are unable to reproduce.
The frames are connected by block-like titanium hinges to create a smooth, cohesive design. The eyewear possesses a timeless, primitive design and offers the lightness and suppleness of acetate frames.
This exhibition displays natural materials such as wood and petrified wood, alongside processed materials used in the production of “WOOD” to be able to observe the delicate, uniform details closely. Explore the similarities found in the textures created by craftsmanship and those created by nature, and appreciate the powerful beauty of each material.
