A jar by Shoji Kamoda, characterized by tension-filled linear patterns and a texture that strongly retains the feel of clay, brings out the texture of the clay particles by re-covering the surface of a piece that has been fired once with a top coat of clay and peeling this off after the final firing. To express this feel in textiles, cotton made using thick threads with a highly dense weave is cut into fine parts and sewn with seams that retain a three-dimensional feel. During the process of stone-washing the completed item in a large mill, padding is added to the inside to make the garment puffy and discharge printing is applied, achieving even and uniform shadows in every part.
