Story 1: Becoming a Working Adult
My sister’s son has been interested in anything and everything since he was little.
He’s the sort of person who’s bursting with curiosity.
He’s cheerful by nature and never shy around strangers.
He’s always been surrounded by lots of friends.
But once something grabs his attention,
He tends to get so absorbed that he loses sight of everything else.
He stood someone up.
He left something behind.
He was overenthusiastic and got hurt.
I’ve heard about such accidents and issues countless times by now.
He’s a good guy, but he’s a bit sloppy and disorganized.
That nephew of mine is finally making his debut as a working adult.
While it’s something to celebrate, I’ve heard that the company he’s joined is fairly traditional.
I’m getting a bit worried.
Will he be able to get to work properly on time every day?
Will he be able to catch and understand advice from his seniors and supervisors,
And smoothly get the hang of his job?
Oblivious to everyone's worries,
He breezily shows off his brand-new, dark-navy suit,
Looking quite pleased with himself.
To celebrate the start of this new chapter of his life,
I’m giving him a notebook with pockets.
He can organize and store his own business cards,
Along with the ones he receives, in the two side pockets.
He can use the book to jot down careful notes, as a record for himself:
The details of meetings, the decisions made in business discussions, and requests.
The day before his first day at work, with no sign of nerves yet,
My nephew is sprawled out on the sofa.
I hand him the notebook.
With words of encouragement,
I wish him luck, and gently tell him to get his act together.
