Story 1: “Becoming a Working Adult”
My sister’s son has been interested in anything and everything since he was small—
he’s the sort of person who’s brimming with curiosity.
He has a cheerful personality and no fear of strangers,
so he’s always been surrounded by lots of friends.
But when he gets really absorbed in something,
he tends to lose himself in it and lose sight of everything else.
He stood someone up.
He left something behind.
He was overenthusiastic and got hurt.
I’ve heard about such accidents and issues many times now.
He’s a good guy, but he’s a bit slipshod and careless.
That nephew of mine is finally making his debut as a working adult.
While that’s something to celebrate, I’ve heard that the company he’s joined is strict,
so I’m a bit worried.
Will he be able to get to work properly at the right time every day?
Will he be able to understand advice from his seniors and supervisors without missing things,
and smoothly get the hang of his job?
Indifferent to the worries of those around him,
he’s proudly showing off his brand-new, dark-blue suit
in a light-hearted manner.
To celebrate the start of this new chapter of his life,
I’m giving him a notebook with pockets.
He can organize and store his own business cards
and the cards that he receives in the two side pockets.
He can use the book to jot down detailed notes, as a record for himself:
the details of meetings, the decisions made in business discussions, and requests.
It’s the day before he starts at the company, and he’s still not nervous;
he’s flopped on the sofa.
I’m going to hand the notebook to my nephew.
It’s filled with my feelings of support, so he can do his best,
and my encouragement, so he can get it together.
