The KURA gallery of ISSEY MIYAKE KYOTO presents KURA Exhibition “UNPACK THE COMPACT,” which was postponed in order to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus.

Multicolored “wrapping” that is bundled, folded, and rolled. Suri. lightly. Soft.
When you pick it up and unfold it, the bag is the coat, the uniquely shaped part is the jacket, and the spongy ball is the top. The "wrapping" changes its shape one after another, giving birth to various clothes.

The ISSEY MIYAKE SPRING SUMMER 2021 collection, “UNPACK THE COMPACT”, was inspired by designer Satoshi Kondo’s idea of delivering garments in compact forms to people all around the world and by doing so sharing the wonder and joy of unpacking them.

This exhibition presents the world of the collection through a series of stop motion animations. With image projections on the back wall and tablets arranged in horizontal and vertical directions on left and right walls, the space turns into a stage, where the garments joyfully transform and start to dance freely, as though they are inviting people to join in. The wooden crate placed at the center is filled with packages of garments in compact forms waiting to be transported and unpacked, as if the whole collection were ready to travel around the world.
