2026.03.02 | ISSEY MIYAKE KYOTO | KURA “TENMOKU COTTON”
The KURA gallery at ISSEY MIYAKE KYOTO presents KURA Exhibition “TENMOKU COTTON.”

From the clay and porcelain materials, the pigments and glazes found in various regions, to the colors, patterns, and techniques that give form to ceramics, each of these elements is carefully examined and translated into textile.
HaaT’s TENMOKU COTTON is a series that focuses on the diverse expressions intrinsic to ceramics, ranging from masterpieces housed in museum collections, to humble folk vessels that accompany everyday life.
Characterized by the pooling of glaze and the gentle bleeding of color which creates mottled, evocative surfaces. To translate this unpredictable rhythm into textile form, TENMOKU COTTON adopts a two-stage process: product dyeing applied after sewing, followed by surface bleaching. Through this approach, organic variations in tone and subtle surface relief emerge across the textile.
Additionally, processed yarn—cotton wrapped around a polyurethane core—is incorporated at varying weaving ratios, imparting elasticity and three-dimensional undulation to the fabric.
In the exhibition space, TENMOKU COTTON is displayed likened to clay or porcelain, placed upon a potter’s wheel evoking the formative stage of a vessel. Just as clay is drawn upward through rotation, and gradually shaped into a vessel, TENMOKU COTTON reveals a variety of textures and expressions across its front, back, and details as it turns.
We invite you to experience firsthand the layered landscapes expressed through TENMOKU COTTON at ISSEY MIYAKE KYOTO | KURA.
