Mark Borthwick: Something Out of Nothing Into Everything
HOMME PLISSÉ ISSEY MIYAKE Autumn/Winter 2026/27 collection In a New Light is captured through the eyes of British photographer Mark Borthwick. The photography and cinematography harness Borthwick’s unique craft of light manipulation.
The concept and design and making of HOMME PLISSÉ ISSEY MIYAKE’s collection In a New Light, resonated with Borthwick’s photography, which celebrates the serendipity and ephemerality of natural phenomena. Through this visual approach—capturing fleeting scenes such as the textured surface of the pleats, the translucency and layered drapes blown in the wind, and the shadows created by the act of wearing—the clothing is reimagined through Borthwick’s poetic lens in a series of “continued moments”.

Mark Borthwick
A British photographer known for a sensual, intuitive approach to photography that subverts the conventions of the form and disintegrates the line between fashion and art. Born in London in 1962, he began as a makeup artist before moving to Paris in 1984, where he photographed performers, club culture, and ballet dancers. His dreamlike imagery, defined by light leaks, saturated color, and unique focus shifts, helped reshape fashion photography through collaborations with i-D, The Face, and Purple. His first monograph, Not In Fashion, was published in 2009, followed by Out of Date in 2025, documenting his early work shot on Polapan instant film. He currently lives and works in Portugal.
