From a single piece of cloth to a three-dimensional form, and then back to flatness again. Based on Japan’s culture of “folding,” 132 5. ISSEY MIYAKE has pioneered new potential in clothing by repeated pursuit of engineered fold structures and material design. While the meticulous structural lines drawn by the fabric are the blueprint that support a 3D form, they are hidden on the inside of the garment through folding, creating the core of a form in which they never normally appear on the surface.

In this exhibition, photographer Yoichiro Nishimura shines a light on the invisible structures within garments using the two techniques of “photograms” and “scangrams.” His subject is “NO. 6 TRANSLUCENT,” which combines “NO. 6,” one of the brand’s basic folding structures, with a new element of translucency.

In photograms, where the subject is placed directly on photographic paper and exposed to light, the intersecting structural lines are revealed thanks to the translucent fabric and the form emerges with the application of light, manifesting as an abstract image. On the other hand, scangrams, where a model created at the product’s design stage is placed on a scanner and captured using transmitted light, meticulously reflect the truth of the fold structure itself. Together, these two techniques depict a view of forms that transcend garments: an interweaving of lines, surfaces, and layers.

Explore the depths of folds and forms with images created from light. Don’t miss this world of quiet discovery, which opens up the concept of clothing anew.
