ABOUT THE BRAND

History

In 2007, designer Issey Miyake and his team the Reality Lab. began their research and development to explore the future of design and making in Japan. What marked the turning point in their R&D was their discovery of recycled polyester fabrics made possible by Japanese technologies and the diverse three-dimensional forms created by computer scientists.

To make original clothing, Reality Lab. explored and studied three-dimensional structures that fold into flat surfaces and adapted them for unique clothing constructions, to be realized in recycled polyester fabrics that were products of numerous refinements.

The clothing created this way was introduced under the brand 132 5. ISSEY MIYAKE in the summer of 2010 in both Tokyo and Paris, where it brought about many new sartorial concepts, including the aesthetic of being folded flat and the wonder of transformation as the garment is worn on the body.
