TYPE-Ⅱ-001/002

The “TYPE-II Tatsuo Miyajima project” is in collaboration with contemporary artist Tatsuo Miyajima.

Miyajima, who is known worldwide as a contemporary artist, creates art works that express time and life with digital numbers from 0 to 9 based on three concepts: “Keep Changing,” “Connect with Everything,” and “Continue Forever.”
A-POC ABLE ISSEY MIYAKE’s new project “TYPE-II Tatsuo Miyajima project” offers the experience of wearing art in daily life by creating clothing with Miyajima’s digital numbers as a motif. This time, a jacket available in two patterns will be sold.
The main visual was shot by photographer Tamaki Yoshida, who captured the strong physical appearance of dancer Koharu Sugawara. The photo collage suggests the experience of wearing time.

TYPE-II-001
Steam Stretch(*), a blouson designed by combining the pleated shape and Miyajima's expression of digital numbers.

*A manufacturing method that shrinks the cloth by applying high temperature steam to create a unique stretch material. Threads that shrink when heated are woven together with other threads, and when steam is applied, only those threads shrink. By shrinking only the intended part of the woven piece of cloth, three-dimensional patterns and shapes are created and completed as clothes.

TYPE-II-002
New material Triporous™️ (made from rice husks)*) and Miyajima's digital numbers are randomly placed on this unisex blouson.

*The Sony Group's initiative with Triporous was previously announced as a project called TYPE-I. Through the efforts of TYPE-I, the brand's expression of "black" has expanded, and a blouson with prominent digital numbers has been realized.

Comment from Tatsuo Miyajima
Comment from Tatsuo Miyajima Many designers think about what materials to use in their designs, or how to design. However, they rarely think about why they have to make something. Needless to say, Issey Miyake designers make clothes by first asking the question, “Why?”
For these jackets, digital numbers, which are my icon, were used as a motif.
However, the motif was applied as a stretch “mold” and a series of repeated numbers was created. This is an excellent design that suggests “time” and “eternity,” which I advocate.
In addition, the designers dared to use woven warp and weft threads to depict the numbers that could have been easily added using a print. Moreover, the threads are made from fiber using Triporous™, a new material developed by Sony Group Corporation with sustainability in mind. The black thread, in which Triporous is mixed into the fiber, does not fade when washed, and is eco-friendly. A deep black color has been achieved that expresses the “sky” that I depict.
The digital numbers represent “time” and “life.”
The jackets released this time are truly clothes woven with “time” and “life.”
