EARTH

Ceramic artist Shoji Kamoda’s work “Colored Jar” makes a strong impact with its contrast between matte vermillion and white wave patterns. It was created not by drawing white lines, but by applying vermillion paint while leaving the base clay exposed. Clay particles, intermingling on the grainy texture that remains on the base, scatter light. To recreate this color and texture, multiple threads are combined and woven. The weft yarn comprises vermillion threads in five different hues, including dyed boucle threads wrapped with lamé threads. Black and white are blended for the warp yarn, and finished in gray only on the reverse side, similar to the jar. Both the structure and patterns draw inspiration from the artwork, with the bold form achieved by cutting wave-like notches into the square body panel and closing the zippers placed within them to shape the torso area and sleeves.
